For Our Neighbors and Community

This summer, GE conducted a habitat construction program in those parts of the river that were dredged last year. Plants native to the Upper Hudson were placed in more than 80,000 places in the river bottom. Each species was selected for its ability to provide food and shelter to river wildlife, ranging from insects to fish, frogs and others.

The new plants are being inspected twice a month through the growing season to assess their condition. Any invasive species observed in the planting areas will be removed. Additional plants may be placed in the river later this year to replace plants that do not successfully take root.

This summer, an independent peer review panel released a draft report of its recommendations for the project following Phase 1. GE, following the recommendation of the peer review panel, has offered to conduct additional dredging in 2011 in order to collect more data and analyze it. GE believes EPA's decisions on final performance standards and on the scope of Phase 2 should follow this collection and analysis as recommended.

Since the beginning of the dredging project, GE’s goal has been to conduct the work safely, to conduct it in accordance with EPA's performance standards, and to minimize disruption to the local community.
